Prognostic Factors of Primary Lymphoma of the Gastrointestinal Tract: A retroscpective study of 51 cases

Abstract
A retrospective study was done 51 cases of primary gastrointestinal lymphoma treated at the Medical center of Korean University from January 1985 to december 1992.
The mean age was 53. The male to female ratio was 1.6 : 1. The primary sites of tumor were an abdominal pain was felt in 84.3% of patients, and an abdominal mass in 54.9% of those.
Roentgenologic findings were mostly non-specific, but suggested a malignant tumor. Abodminal sonography showed positive findings in 86.7% of cases and abdominal CT in 83.3% of cases. A definitive diagnosis was difficult to confirm. In 19 cases of
stomach, 17 cases were confirmed by gastroscopic biopsy, and in 5 case of colon and rectum , 4 cases by colonoscopic biopsy, Stage, evaluated according to the classification of Musshoff's criteria, was I in 14 cases,¥±-1 in 12,¥±-2 in 9, and ¥³in
16.
According to the Working Formulation, 5 patients were low grade, 35 in intermediate grade, and 10 high grade. The most frequent histopathologic cell type was diffuse large cleaved cell (39.2%) in working formulation. The mean tumor size was
6.6cm.
All
patients had undergo laparotomy. The curative resectability was 78.4% 40 patients had curative resection, 6 palliative resection, and 5 patients had only explorative laparotomy with a biopsy. 44 patients had postoperative adjuvant therapy, 21
patients
chemotherapy, 6 patients radiotherapy, and 17 patients a combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Overall 5 years, but 0% of those who ahd not(p=0.0001). the stage of the disease was a very important prognosis factor. The 5 years survival rate was 92.3% for patients with stage I disease, but 37.5% for those with stage¥³disease (p=0.02). The
age,
primary site, treatment modality, histopathologic grade, and tumor size were statistically insignificant depending on survival rate.
